The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic resort island located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication that the family owners has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a substantial array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
