A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation took place as police and firefighters went into the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman got detained at the site and a third person who fled following the blast was found not long after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene revealed the building left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the blast had occurred on a floor above the entrance and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to local news, adding that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
