Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.
The economist stated in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have served, excited about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await following their development".
Summers, who previously headed Harvard University, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages revealed that Summers communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for accused trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm said it understood Summers' choice to depart.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the company commented.
Legislative Background
This announcement arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on this week to endorse a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to disclose its records on Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently proceed to the desk of President Trump for approval. He has stated he plans to approve the measure, after reversing his position on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the legislative panel days ago mentioned numerous well-known personalities in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.
The emails indicated that the economist and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce Summers to notable international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the emails were shared with the public, the former official said he took "complete accountability for my poor decision to maintain communicating with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and repair bonds with the people most important to me".
Career Background
The professor occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public roles previously on Monday, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank in DC where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was not affiliated with the organization.
Summers joined the directorate of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive the company leader.
